Taiwan tea is well-known for its charming aroma and its various types, such as Baozhong Tea, Dongding Tea and Oriental Beauty Tea. Each type of tea has its own unique taste and different characteristics. Apparently, there is a new featured tea called “Red Oolong Tea” in Luye area, which has combined the characteristics of oolong tea and black tea.

Under the guidance of Taitung Tea Experiment Station, red oolong tea was finally available in September, 2008. The tea is selected from two leaves and one bud and combined with some methods of processing black tea. The freshly brewed tea water appears to be a deep amber color. The tea quality is tended to have a fruity aroma and a mellow and smooth taste.

One of distinctive features of red oolong tea is to focus on the taste and the color of tea water. Once the tea is done, it is still required to bake for the second time in order to bring out the fragrance. It is also worth mentioning that red oolong can be served in both hot and cold.

Luye area is situated on the low-altitude tea growing area. Compared with high-altitude tea growing area, it is obviously lack of advantages. However, the excellent weather conditions and with the help from local tea experiment station and cultivators, the emergence of “Red Oolong” tea species apparently becomes the new local featured tea in Luye.

【特產】鹿野新興特色茶 紅烏龍滋味醇厚圓滑

  台灣茶的風味迷人,種類更是繁多,像是包種茶、凍頂茶及東方美人茶,其滋味喉韻大不相同,各有各的特色口感。而最近在鹿野地區,也出現了結合烏龍茶與紅茶特色的新興本土茶,紅烏龍。

  在台東茶葉改良場的指導之下,紅烏龍於2008年的9月問世,嚴選一心二葉茶芽,以重萎凋、重發酵和重攪拌,結合部分紅茶製法加工而成,泡出來的茶湯呈現深琥珀色,茶質厚重具熟果香,滋味醇厚而圓滑,相當耐泡。

  其中,紅烏龍相當強調茶湯滋味的甘醇與水色,因此成茶後還需要再次烘焙,可帶有輕焙火熟香,但不能有焦味產生。

  值得一提的是,紅烏龍不僅可熱泡,冷泡的風味更是絕佳!用常溫開水沖泡後,放入冰箱冷藏,第二天就可以帶著冰冰涼涼的紅烏龍出門,喝出冷飲的暢快風味!

  鹿野地區屬於中低海拔茶區,相較於高海拔的茶區其實種茶優勢不明顯,但在東台灣絕佳的天候環境,及當地茶改場與茶農的努力下,「紅烏龍」茶種的出現,儼然成為鹿野新興的本土特色茶,其甘醇又帶有熟果香的滋味,值得細細品嚐。(攝影/廖祐笙)
