By TTNews Reporter Liao, You-Sheng TAITUNG, TAIWAN (TTNews) – The peripheral area of the East Rift Valley is surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery and known for its pleasant weather. The East Rift Valley not only is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Taiwan, but it is also regarded as one of the most prominent tea growing areas. Honey-scented black tea has become relatively popular and has been greatly promoted by the local government and tea farms in recent years. The combination of the refreshing aroma and naturally sweet aftertaste is part of honey-scented black tea’s charm. The production of honey-scented black tea is slightly similar to Oriental Beauty Tea. Honey-scented black tea is made from locally sourced tea leaves bitten by leafhoppers. Although leafhoppers are generally considered as tea leave pests, the biting process is called “salivating”. Due to intensive chewing, the affected leaves curl downwards; however, it is the help of the leafhoppers’ spit that create a natural honey scent while roasting.
