TAINAN CITY, Taiwan
(TraNews) – Fruit pastry seems to be ordinary, however, the pastry has its own story. Different from most of the regions celebrate new-born babies with oil glutinous rice, red eggs and cakes, Yaunkung in Tainan celebrates with fruit pastries. It thus becomes one of the unique custom in the local region.
It is said that in 1828, Yuankung area was lack of male. As a result, local people begged God to bring male to the village. They also promised that once there were people laboring boys, the family would give each of the villagers pastry.
The villagers eventually had new born baby boys. So the local people went back to the temple to thank the God. The day of the God’s birthday thus becomes an important holiday for the 4 villages. Family who has new baby boy before January 20 has to give out fruit pastries to other villagers to share the pleasure.
There are 2 types of fruit pastries: lucky pastry and elder pastry. The lucky pastry is to give out to those villagers who donate to the temple each year; as for elder pastry is for those who are over 60 years old. The fruit pastries are made by local bakeries. The main ingredients are mal sugar, sugar, oil, flour, sweet potatoes, starch and juice. It has round shape and weighs 1kg or 500g. The pastry also symbolizes luck and life prolonging.
You can only have this kind of fruit pastries in Yuankung, Tainan. The tradition has lasted for over a century. It is not only a renowned specialty but a simple pleasant taste.
