The coffee market in Taiwan is enormous and the population of drinking coffee has also shown an increasing trend; however, the main sources of coffee beans are mostly dependent on imports. Under the efforts of local farmers in recent years, now Taiwan is also able to cultivate a large amount of high-quality coffee beans with a unique and fine flavour.

Due to the special characteristics of the local environment, it makes Guosing region in Nantou an ideal place to grow coffee beans. The history of coffee cultivation can be traced back to about 10~20 years ago. Whether it is about the yield or the quality, many people who once drank Guosing coffee have stated that domestically produced coffee actually taste even better than they ever imagined.

Coffee is an emerging industry in Guosing Township. At present, the cultivated area is about 80 hectares and 80% of coffee beans are planted in 7,800 metres above sea level. Because of the huge temperature difference between the day and the night, that makes the local coffee have a naturally sweet taste, but not sour and bitter at all.

The most significant features of Guosing coffee is that the coffee crop is picked by hand. Only the ripe coffee beans are harvested, so that the farmers will be able to fully get hold of the maturity and the quality of coffee beans. When it comes to the roasting part, Guosing coffee beans are usually roasted lightly or moderately.

In addition, the promotion of Taiwan’s coffee can also achieve the concept of LOHAS and carbon reduction. As the government recently has actively promoted the so-called “Origin-ism”, it is hoped that everyone can make good use of domestically produced ingredients and materials in order to reduce the carbon emissions during the import process.

【產業】道地台灣國姓咖啡 樂活減碳新主張

  台灣的咖啡市場龐大、喝咖啡的人口也越來越多,而咖啡豆的來源主要都是仰賴進口居多,不過台灣這幾年在農民的努力之下,也培育出許多高品質、風味獨特的精品咖啡豆。

  南投國姓地區因為海拔與氣候適合栽種咖啡豆,在十幾、二十多年前就有許有農民投入栽種咖啡的行列,在堅持手工摘採與烘焙技術的改良下,無論在產量或是品質上都有所成長,許多喝過的人都紛紛表示,原來國姓也有好的咖啡、而且品質不輸給進口咖啡豆。

  咖啡是國姓鄉新興產業,目前栽種面積約有80多公頃,而且八成以上都是生長在海拔7、800公尺以上,日夜溫差大,讓當地咖啡喝起來較甘美,而且不會酸、苦,品質非常優良。

  國姓咖啡最大的特色就是手工摘採,豆子成熟時才會收成,因此可以完全掌握豆子的熟度與品質,烘焙出來的咖啡豆風味較為香、醇、厚,而在烘焙的部分國姓咖啡豆以中烘焙與中重烘焙為主,當地的咖啡農指出,一般以中烘焙較能呈現出國姓咖啡的香味,因為中烘焙會讓咖啡豆帶點咖啡豆特殊的果酸香,風味獨特。

  此外,推廣台灣咖啡也具有樂活、減碳的概念。由於政府近來提倡所謂的「產地主義」,是希望能夠使用地生產的食材或是原料,如此一來可以減少進口過程的碳排放,達到減碳與環保的理念。(攝影/范綱武)
