Penghu County, Taiwan –
Yuanbeiyu Islet is situated east of Citou Village in Baisha Township, which is a ten-minute ferry ride from the East Sea. It was named so because it is shaped like a seashell. Currently there are only few people living on the island and the population is mostly elders. Due to the development of Penghu tourism, the number of travelers has gradually increased in recent years.
The entire Yuanbeiyu Islet is a hill. During the summer, you can see the islet is covered in green. The east coast of Yuanbeiyu Islet possesses the most well-known basalt landscapes, including the stone pen, stone ink holder and stone pleated skirt. Visitors who participate in the cruise tour will be able to see these fascinating and interesting basalt formations.
When the tides ebb, a shallow water path will appear between Yuanbeiyu Islet and Shagang Village. The water path is a total of five kilometers, which Yuanbeiyu ancestors used to rely on for outside contact. Right now it has become a popular trail for tourists to engage in intertidal zone activities. If you want to climb up to the hill watching beautiful scenery, all you need to do is to follow the stone trail next to Yuanbei Elementary School. As you reach the lighthouse, you will be able to overlook Pengpeng Beach, Niaoyu Islet, Jishan Islet, Dinggou Islet, Shiaobaisha, Nanmiangua Islet and other small islets. If you climb up from the other side of village, you can enjoy the stunning moment of intertwined red tile houses from the hillside. Unlike other islets, Yuanbeiyu Islet is a serene and peaceful island where buries the distant memory of this fishing village.
