TAIPEI, TAIWAN (TTNews) – Tucked away on Zhongzheng 1st Road in Yingge Township, Taipei County, Hongde Temple claims to be the very first temple in Taiwan dedicated to Sun Bin, the deity of military strategy. In the meantime, the temple is also dedicated to other Taoist gods. The biggest feature of Hongde Temple is a 22-metre tall statue of Sun Bin towered impressively from the roof of temple against the backdrop of perfect blue sky and lush green hills.
The construction of Hongde Temple was completed in 1969. Sun Bin was a famous military strategist who lived during the Warring States Period of Chinese history. An alleged descendant of Sun Tzu, the author of the Art of War, Sun Bin was known for his brilliance at an early age. To further allow more believers and visitors to have an in-depth understanding of the story of Sun Bin, the temple is exquisitely decorated with refined wall engravings and detailed stone sculptures, telling the tales of Sun Bin.
It is worth mentioning that because Sun Bin excelled in military strategies, many Taiwanese military officers will come here and pray to Sun Bin for bestowing wisdom upon them before conducting large-scale military exercises over the years. Hongde Temple so far is the only temple in Yingge that joins both religious and tourism functions.
