Exclusive Interview: Su, Yong-liang, the young folk art sculptor

In late fall, we came to Huatan town to visit Su, Yong-liang, the young folk art sculptor.

He was interested in art and craft since the childhood, and he often looked carvings in the temples.

After graduating from junior high school, as an apprentice, Su, Yong-liang started to learn the carving of Buddhist statues. Su, Yong-liang told us that the carving of Buddhist statues is the “Buddhist statues decoration”, which means to carve the facial expression and posture of Buddhist statues. The carving symbolizes to give Buddhist statues new life. During the 22-month apprenticeship, he learned from a senior sculptor in Sihu. Also, he drew on the strengths of each sculpture skills. After finishing the apprenticeship, he tried carving for many years and then gained the experiences. He began to use new materials and skills to find the most proper carving for each material. He always asks for the advice of his master whenever breaking the record.

While he told his story, he showed us many drafts of Buddhist statues. He mentioned that he went to the temple and asked the advices of seniors whether these Buddhist statues’ styles suit the deities. He also brought the revised drafts and asked deities for the omen, and then he started to carve the Buddhist statues. Besides, he sometimes studies relics which failed to be handed down from the past generations. He tired to search the information from the records and folk tales, and hopes these lost traditions could be reborn by carving.

As to his latest work—lucky fortune tiger, he mentioned that he was assigned by Hu Ye (Tiger God) Temple to carve a God of wealth, the personification of Tiger God. It is said that Japanese lucky fortune cat is transformed by lucky fortune tiger.

Each lucky fortune tiger has its own facial expression and posture. Because of his free and easy drawings, all lucky fortune tigers are exactly different. A lucky fortune tiger wears the good luck shoes, with the wide forehead and jaw, the big tummy, the lines symbolizing the good luck on the back. It costs around one month from design to painting.

At last, he represented that he hopes to promote the standard of deity statues in Taiwan.

The traditional crafts, especially mixed the local cultures, are of great worth.

  晚秋時節,空氣中帶有淡淡的涼意,我們來到彰化花壇,拜訪一位年輕的傳統民俗工藝雕刻家--蘇永良。
自小就對美術、工藝充滿興趣的蘇永良,尤其是對傳統工藝美術有著濃烈的情感,因此國小和國中時常常跑到寺廟裡看廟裡的雕龍畫棟,舊時的記憶與印象,以及對雕刻工藝的熱忱,從此就和民俗工藝雕刻有了不解之緣。

  國中畢業之後,蘇永良到鄰近的溪湖當學徒,開始從事學習佛像雕刻的生涯,蘇永良說:「以古早的說法而言,佛像雕刻就是所謂的『妝佛』,就是給佛像刻上表情與姿態,也等於是賦予佛像一種新的生命。」在當學徒的一年十個月期間,跟著溪湖的老木雕師傅學習,當時可以說是融合各家之長,將各種木雕技法的表現與神態加以取之所長。學成之後,以傳統的方式奠立基礎,在經過多年嘗試與磨練之後所累積的經驗,再進一步嘗試用新的素材與新的雕刻技法,讓每一件素材都可以達到最適當的表現方式,而每當有新的突破,也一定不忘回去請教老師傅,在尋求新的創意之餘,也不忘最根本的傳統根基。

  說著,他就一邊展示許多佛像的草稿一邊說,每當設計好一個佛像的姿勢、型態與服裝時,他都會拿到廟裡向長輩請示,詢問這些佛像的造型是否合乎這些神祉職稱應有的神態,修正過後的草圖也會拿到廟裡擲茭請示,之後才真正開始佛像的雕刻。此外,他也不時研究一些古代早已失傳的東西,試著從一些文獻記載、街頭巷尾耆老鄉民的言談中找尋資料,讓這些失傳的傳統文化再度以雕刻的方式呈現出來。

  而談到他的最新創作,也是做為彰化縣形象特產「招財虎」傳統藝術品時,蘇永良說,彰化地區有一個虎爺廟委託他最一個虎爺雕像,希望雕刻一個擬人化的虎神做為代表吉祥、如意的財神爺,因此開啟了「招財虎」創作契機。他繼續指出,現在處處可見的日本「招財貓」,據說是從古代中國的「咬錢虎」演變而來,另一方面,他也希望能有一種能夠代表台灣在地及富民族性的文化象徵,因而激發了「招財虎」的創作靈感。

  造型與表情豐富的招財虎,寬大的天額與地額,有著強烈的「威形」,挺著有如彌勒佛般大肚皮,背後有兩個象徵如意圓紋--如意紋,以及腳上穿著如意鞋,散發著福態與如意的型態,讓這尊「招財虎」有了濃烈的傳奇性與神話般的色彩。蘇永良說,雕一尊招財虎從造型設計到彩繪約需要一個月的時間,而彩繪過程是賦予招財虎神韻最重要的階段,當他在彩繪時也都用隨性、灑脫的筆法,毫不拘束的筆跡也讓每一尊招財虎有了截然不同的神韻與表情。

  最後,蘇永良指出,為了完成這些雕刻的神像,除了參考古代書籍與向長輩詢問之外,不斷嘗試描繪了好幾次,才敢真正用在神像上,也希望藉由這些作品,能進一步提升台灣神像雕刻的水準。

  傳統的工藝雕刻,特別是融入的在地的文化色彩之後,也具有非常高的藝術價值,在這些佛像與招財虎上,這些深遠的意義也將會在這些佛像上繼續流傳下去。
