Kaohsiung City, Taiwan –
During the process of historical development, Taiwan constantly tries to accept different ethnic cultures from all sides in order to continuously develop the distinctive culture of this land. Among that, Hakka ethnic group has played an important role in the historical development. From the reverence of gods, we will be able to have a more profound understanding of its charming characteristic.
Yimin Temple, the center of Hakka belief, is situated on Baojhong Street in Kaohsiung City. Baojhong Yimin Temple was built in fall 1973 and completed in 1977. The magnificent architecture showing a righteous momentum is just like the day Yiming King pledged to defend the country with the spirit of selfless love.
According to historical data from the temple, the origin of Yimin Temple can be traced back to the rebellion of Lin Shuang-Wen in Ching Dynasty in 1782. After the rebellion ceased, the rest of survived soldiers tried to transport at least two hundred martyrs to a burial ground. However, something weird happened on the halfway. The cattle would not go further when they were in Fangliao, Hsinchu. People believed that cattle must know the place was a fortunate land, so they decided to bury the bodies at the foothill behind Hsinchu Yiming Temple.
In 1860, the rebellion happened again in Changhua district. The government was unable to cease the war, so it sought out civil military for helps. After the rebellion was halted again, people buried a dozen of martyrs near the temple.
The origin of Kaohsiung Baojhong Yiming Temple was begun in 1976. With the gradual prosperity of the city until 1973, the council of believers decided to seek for another location for reconstruction. Until now, Baojhong Yiming Temple has become the largest and the most magnificent Hakka temple in Kaohsiung City.
Kaohsiung Baojhong Yiming Temple not only is the religious center of Hakka ethnic groups, but it is also a valuable heritage asset of Taiwanese Hakka culture and history. Regardless of ethnic groups, the spirit of selfless sacrifice and dedication to the community is admirable!
