Pingtung County, Taiwan –
The well-known Donggang King Boat Ceremony is hosted by Donglong temple every three years when it comes to the 2nd (Ox), 5th (Dragon), 8th (Ram) and 11th (Dog) year of the Chinese 12-year cycle. For this local grand event, all the residents of Donggang will set aside their works and all participate in the ceremony of welcoming the king.
It is said that the origin of Donggang King Boat Ceremony is an activity of praying for healthy and peaceful life. When ancestors of Ching Dynasty came to Taiwan, a severe plague caused panic and chaos among the people. As Wen Wangyeh was sent here to solve the problem, he dispelled the disease or evil spirit via the ritual. People believed that he eventually sailed away along with the plague.
Our ancestors were pretty convinced about the legend; therefore future generations inherited the renewal ceremony from generation to generation. Donggang King Boat Ceremony not only is a well-known activity along the southwest coast of Taiwan, but it has also been one of the most famous and important religious events in Taiwan.
2009 Donggang King Boat Ceremony begins with the main “Welcoming King Boat” on Saturday, October 10, 2009. Welcome nation-wide people to take part in this triennial grand event of Donglong Temple!
