Kaohsiung County, Taiwan –
On Saturday morning, the sky is covered with murky clouds in the southern Taiwan, but the weather apparently didn’t affect the Cishan Township at all. For the people in Cishan, it was a memorable day. The restoration of Cishan Train Station with nearly a hundred years of history was finally completed, which was worth celebrating!
Because of the re-opening of Cishan Train Station, nearby restaurants and shops were ready to welcome the nationwide tourists. Cishan Old Street was once again filled with all kinds of traditional snacks and crowded with people from all over the places. It is believed that such development will help to extend the positive values of Cishan tourism.
Cishan Train Station, built in 1912, was originally designed to transport the cane sugar raw materials and finished sugar products from Ciwei Sugar Refinery. The railway runs from Cishan 1st Road leading all the way to Jiuchutang Station in Dashu. In addition to the delivery of sugar and other goods, it was also open for public transportation. Cishan Station became the main station with a total length of 40-kilometre railway network. However, it was fully shut down in 1978 and the railway network was removed; Cishan Station was the only remaining.
Cishan Station is a unique building combined with European and Japanese styles with a simple yet elegant appearance. The foot of the walls were built with red bricks. The outer walls were constructed with wood. The external wall body was covered in white plaster. On the right side of the station was a waiting room with an octagonal-shaped top like a Gothic church steeple. On the left side, the triangular room with diamond-shaped tiled roof makes the station even more lively and enjoyable.
Walking through time and space, Cishan Station with nearly a hundred years of history might not have an actual transportation function any more, but it is a fairly important local asset in history and culture. Next time if you have a chance visiting Cishan, it is recommended that you can pay a visit to Cishan Station.
