Taitung County, Taiwan –

Taitung’s annual Lantern Festival has been held for nearly 60 years in hopes of praying for steady weather, peaceful and tranquil year and abundant grain harvest as well as promoting traditional folk culture. The long-standing traditional procession “Bombarding Handan Festival” has made a significant contribution to preserve the spirit of traditional folk activity and to integrate with tourism resource.

Such strikingly magnificent Bombarding Handan Festival was once banned in 1983, and all the Bombarding Handan Festival-related folk activities were postponed. Until 1989, temple head Mr. Lee Chien-Chih actively promoted the rehabilitation. The ceremony of “Bombarding Handan Festival” was re-launched again after being postponed for 7 years.

The annual Bombarding Handan Festival’s event organizer is determined by throwing divination blocks. It was said that the Master Handan didn’t have his own temple, so the Master Handan would be invited into the destined believers’ house. Believers would worship him every day until next year. Before all the relevant activities of Bombarding Handan Festival were banned, the Master Handan was gone for a while. He was once again found in the previous organizer’s house.

After the ceremony of Bombarding Handan Festival was unbanned, all the responsibilities were handed down to Mr. Lee Chien-Chih. At the time, no one was willing to throw the divination blocks, so Mr. Lee decided to do it himself and successfully invite the Master Handan back to home. Moreover, Hsuanwu Temple was later set up by Mr. Lee for the purpose of worshipping the Master Handan. “Bombarding Handan Festival” now has been designated as a folk-cultural activity, which must be performed every year.
