A particular folk phenomenon can be observed among other folk activities for the duration of Taitung Lantern Festival. “Sweeping the House” is a distinctive folk performance that the head of the parade formation will act out in people’s houses or stores by practicing the sweeping and praying rituals.
“Sweeping the House” this kind of folk custom is commonly seen in Taitung region, especially before or after the Lantern Festival. Many local businessmen and people will invite the head of the parade formation to perform this ritual, in hopes of sweeping bad lucks away and brining good fortune into the house. Before the head of the parade formation performs the ritual, believers will place an incense burner table in front of the main entrance for the purpose of worshiping the god of fortune.
In fact, the head of the parade formation would be invited to perform the ritual of “Sweeping the House” that was not necessarily because of the dirt in the house, but mostly people hope to be bestowed with good fortune, peace and wealth.
