“Bao Ma Tzai”, also known as an informer, is a pioneer of a pilgrimage team. He stikes the gong along the way to inform people the arrival of Matsu’s palanquin. It was rumoured that the history of “Messenger” has been passed down from ancient times. Wherever Matsu’s palanquin goes, he will always be at the forefront of the pilgrimage team.
Modern “Messenger” has a very strange and eye-catching look. Each part of his styles has a certain meaning. He wears a wide-brimmed rain hat to show that he is responsible for his duties. He wears a pair of presbyopic glasses to indicate that he can see clearly. He wears a swallow-tailed moustache to prove that he is sincere in his words. He wears a wool padded jacket to demonstrate that he suffers from pains. His right barefoot means that he keeps his feet on the ground. His scar on the left calf means that he will never forget about his mistakes.
He brings pork legs and leek to indicate that he has enough food and a long life. He carries a tin-made tea pot to interpret that he cherishes his blessings. He smokes tobacco in a long-stemmed pipe to express his gratitudes. He strikes the gong to show that he works very hard. He holds a long fan, paper fan and folding fan to represent his kindness. The role of “Messenger” is trying to tell people to be grateful, contented and kind towards our life.
