NANTOU, TAIWAN (TTNews) – A reunion dinner is traditionally held on the eve of Chinese New Year, where all the family members would get together for the celebration. The reunion dinner is always extravagant and includes a tempting array of classic dishes with auspicious meanings. Some of the foods are consumed for names or appearances that mean well.
In Chinese, fish plays a fairly important role in the festive celebrations, especially during the Lunar New Year. It is customary to serve the fish dish in the reunion dinner and it is also the only one dish that cannot be eaten completely, symbolizing a wish for abundance in the coming year. The fish is supposedly served whole with head and tail attached to indicate the completeness.
The word “fish” and “surplus” in Mandarin are homophones, which represents abundance and well-off life. Furthermore, in the Chinese customs, fish is traditionally eaten for wishing the prosperity of future generations.
