Miaoli County, Taiwan –
Jhunan Ciding Twin Tunnels (Ciding No.1 & No.2 Tunnel) was officially announced and registered as the historical buildings in Miaoli County in 2005. Jhunan Ciding Twin Tunnels are the only two connected double-track railway tunnels. The tunnels are built with half red brick and half cement brick. Not only the structures are rare, but the twin tunnels are still well-preserved. The twin tunnels certainly are part of the most important tourist attractions in Ciding region.
Ciding Twin Tunnels were completed in 1928, which were specifically built for the completion of the new railway from Xiangshan to Jhunan. In 1975, due to the Taiwan Railway Administration’s promotion of railway electrification projects, the twin tunnels were suffered the fate of abandonment, after the adverse conditions and the traffic safety had been taken into consideration. After the twin tunnels have been abandoned for more than 20 years, Jhunan Township Office cleaned out the surrounding environment, re-surfaced the railway track and transformed the twin tunnels into Ciding Tunnel Cultural Park. On the north side of Ciding Station, there is an observation deck called “LaoQuGuanHai”, which is linked up with those small trails in the wood.
If you have a chance coming to Ciding, besides the Twin Tunnels and LaoQuGuanHai, you can also pay a visit to Southern 18 Peaks Mountain Scenic Area, Jianbi Mountain, Western Coastal Bikeway, Animal Medicine Research Institute, etc. If tourists require the tour guide service, please welcome to contact Ciding Village Rural Development Association.
