KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN (TTNews) – Taiwanese snack has become the synonymous term of this island. Snacking has been deeply interwoven into people’s daily life. In fact, one of the quickest way to experience the charm of Taiwan culinary culture is to visit one of any well-known and large-scale night markets in Taiwan.

Liuhe Night Market in Kaohsiung can be regarded as one of the most representative night markets in the southern Taiwan region. The night market routinely opens from 5 PM until 5 AM of the following day. The place is like an ever-bright city and has become one of the most significant tourist destinations in Kaohsiung. There is a bewildering selection of traditional and creative snacks available in the night market, such as stinky tofu, oyster omelet, pork stuffed meatball, Danzi noodles, char-grilled corn on the cob, BBQ, black pepper cake, burrito, roasted chicken in steamed bun and more.

The atmosphere is always noisy and crowded with hawkers shouting and music playing out loud. Walking in the night market, visitors not only can sample all kinds of delicacies, but most importantly, they can also experience the charm of Taiwan’s grassroots culture. The history of Liuhe Night Market can be traced back to around 1953. Liuhe Night Market is a long-standing snacking and shopping hub, as well as a destination for residents and foreign travelers alike. In recent years, foreign travelers account for nearly 70% of the number of visitors; mostly are from mainland China and Southeast Asia.

During the weekends or public holidays, Liuhe is completely packed with crowds. Since visitors often have difficulty to move, they can only go with the flow. If you take a closer look, it is not hard to notice that there is a considerable number of old stores with over 30 years of history.
