Alivongvong is a traditional cuisine commonly enjoyed by people in Amis tribe. Alivongvong is prepared by wrapping glutinous rice, fish and pork with pandanus tectorius leaf and then steaming it in bamboo basket. While steaming, the aroma of Pandanus tectorius will permeate through the meat and glutinous rice.
In Amis tribe, they believe in being industrious and thrifty. Knitting is an important skill that all Amis’ women have to learn. When husbands go out to hunt or farm, their wives will prepare Alivongvong for them.
Here are the steps to cook Alivongvong and enjoy it with your family and friends.
Prepare four pandanus tectorius leaves. Use cutter knife to remove the thorns on the leaves. Make sure that the four leaves are of the same length and smoothen them.
Take two pandanus tectorius leaves and cross weave them. Please take note to keep weaving with left on upper side and right on lower side until a small pouch is formed.
Soak washed glutinous rice in water. Add glutinous rice into the small pouch, then add meat and other ingredients. Fill a large pot with water, add Alivongvong and bring it to a boil for an hour.
